Student Editorials: An Economy Vulnerable to War
By Nava Billet

How do you wage war against a country? Over the past two years Israel has been challenged with Palestinian terrorism. There has been loss of life, fear in the streets, reluctance to do everyday activities, like shopping and traveling to work. Alongside the security front there is another front to this war- not necessarily on the front headlines but no less pernicious than that. The frequent disruption of everyday life by suicide bombing, sniper attacks, and appearance of suspicious objects has resulted in a quiet casualty of war, a major economic recession in Israel. The destruction of life has taken with it valuable employees and potential workers. Tourism, one of Israel’s most successful forms of industry, is down because visitors fear entering a ‘war zone.’ Foreign investments are down because people don’t like to risk putting money in an economy that could potentially collapse. Along with unemployment levels, poverty levels are on the rise. (Read more...)

Israelis Nervous...
By Arielle Anhalt

"Twenty-four year olds Asas Darmi and Amir Paya have been best friends since childhood. Both boys grew up in a small town ten kilometers from the Lebanese border. They attended middle school and high school together, joined the army, and enrolled in college. Sharing a love for music, the two participate in a traveling music group. Despite their shared background, these two men represent divergent views on the issue of America's war with Iraq." (Read more...)

Israel's Mood: Israel and the War on Iraq
By Abigail Marcus

In 1991 when the warning sirens rang in Israel, Captain Neta Reef was a teenager. “It was always scary, having to carry around gas masks, knowing that at any minute a scud could just come down on you and your family and just--boom.” Now at 25, he is in an operational squadron in Israel’s Air Force that flies Apache helicopters. “Now at least I know I will be up in the air and able to protect my family and my home the minute something happens, if something does happen.” Geographically, Israel is a mere sixty minute flight from Iraq, and miniscule in proportion. Israel is known globally as a “little America,” and with increasingly violent anti-American sentiments growing across the Middle East, it is possible that she become a manifest target in a war she isn’t even fighting. Angels Guarding us all at the Israel Day Parade
By Melissa Hauptman and Bella Ballas

"Walking down 5th Avenue in the Israel Day Parade on June 1st, onlookers cheered on the Guardian Angels, a secular organization that often goes unnoticed amongst the many Jewish institutions marching alongside them. The Guardian Angels are dedicated to marching in many parades. The Israel Day Parade is one which they feel particularly dedicated to. Since their founding 24 years ago, they have marched in the parade every year without fail. Frank Lee, Urban Angel Coordinator for the NYC chapter said that the organization feels compelled to march in order to thank their many Jewish supporters. Frank expressed his sincere feelings when he said, “We support the Jewish people as they support us.” He continued to say, “I love marching with the Jewish people because we are integrating a diverse organization into the parade.” (Read more...)

Featured Media Critique Article (2002 -2003):

Armed With Weapons and a Will
By Zachary Saltzman

"Armed With Weapons and a Will, Palestinian Factions Plot Revenge" written by James Bennet is an example of and attempted well-balanced article that still suffers from self-delusion endemic in American media. Almost every statement given by the terror groups is balanced with an Israeli comment, and the groups are not portrayed as romantic fighters of the oppressed. Still, only at the end of the article does it state that the intent of most of the terror groups is the total destruction of Israel. Too much emphasis is put on what the representative of the Al Aksa says, which contradicts the actions of his "organization." Bennet's unwillingness to confront the harsh reality head on disturbs the reality he tries to portray."
